Capt. Lonnie Massey, WW2 & Korea

Capt. Lonnie Massey

Sgt. Grit and Staff,

Thank you for your help and assistance with my recent order for replacement ribbons and the Gunner bursting bombs device for my father, Lonnie Massey.

He is a Marine and a veteran of the campaigns in the Pacific and one of the Chosin Few.  In the Pacific he was with the 3rd Marinie Amphib Corps and handled the radio repair and communications for the divisions.  He has some intersting stories about Guacalcanal and Boughanville, etc. and the radio relay and carrier platoons.  He was even one of the instructors for the original 29 Navajo Codetalkers

During Korea he helicoptered into the Chosin to take over the 1st Signal Battalion after the 1st Lt. was taken prisoner by the CCF.  He and his unit maintained radio communications for the Division, Puller and Gen. OP Smith.  He and the unit overheard the notorious conversation of USA Genral Almond to Gen. Smith offering to help evacuate the staff and leave the Division to dend for itself.  But I guess you all know that story.

Dad was thrilled to recieve his replacement bursting bombs, as he was more proud of being a Marine Gunner and Technical Mstr. Sgt.  than I believe he was for retiring as a Captain, June 1959 from H&HS, 2dMAW, AirFMFLant.  Thank you for helping to celebrate and recognize that anniversary.

He is 93 and his mottos are " I'm still going! " & " Never Give UP"

With respect and admiration to you all,

Robert M. Massey
