In reguards to the unranked marine joe featherston, who served 1963 to 1965 in kaneohe bay to phu bai, RVN.
I first went to Vietnam in April of 69. Returned home in April of 70, only to return Juy of 71 for my second tour. Being trained as an 0351 my first tour, but when I got there they made me an 0331.
To me this looks like a M 50 A1 Ontos, with (6) 106 recoiless rifles M40's, (1) 30 cal machine gun and (2) 50 cal spotting guns. Not to be confused with a M2 50 cal machine gun. The rounds for the spotting guns were shorter and could not be interchanged with the machine gun.
The Ontos I belive was decommissioned in 1970 and less than 300 made.
But the 106's stayed in service for awhile but had problems with the indicator light devices so the rounds could not leave the device properly. Weapons were turned in for repair.
The 106's were retired, went to TOW missels which became MOS 0352 from 0351.
I became a combat photographer and went on to Beirut in May of 83, returned home Dec. 83. Lost alot of great Marines from all mos's. You have probably seen alot of my pictures. If you want to see some more i'll sent you some. Then went to the Persain Gulf and returned home to retire.
My final thought on this issue would be the photo on page 91, the Marine Corps web belt looks a little short for Marine Corps regulations. (suck in the gut)
