Daddy’s Girl

My dad died in 2000. This Saturday would have been his 87th birthday. He was my best friend growing up and I was his little girl.

He served in WWII with the 2nd Division, 2nd bat. 8th Marines. He was a flamethrower in the Pacific. He was at Tarawa, Guam, Saipan, and Tinian. He also helped "mop up" on Okinawa. He served in China 1947 – 1949 and was at the Chosin with Chesty Puller in Korea. His DD214 reads like a combat history of the Marine Corps. His last rank was that of a Gunnery Sgt.

He taught me never to give up…".just fall back and charge the hill again". He also told me if he wanted me to have an opinion he would have "issued me one at birth". Finally," he did not fight  4 years in the Pacific for me to (insert offense here)!"

He was always there for me and he taught me a great deal about life. He was very wise and loved by all that knew him. I am glad I have his sense of humor.

. I only found out about what he was up against  later in life. Like many combat veterans he could not talk about it. I know my son and I are miracles…because it was a miracle that my dad survived carrying 72 lbs of napalm around on his back. I will always love him and love the Corps. He was the best dad ever!

Semper Fi to all who have served from a daughter of the Corps! I love you daddy!
