Thanksgiving 1962

For Thanksgiving the cooks were able to obtain some frozen turkeys from the Army. The cooks put the turkeys on steel tables, the cooks then sat on the other tables. We gave them all the heavy scrub brush heads we could find. The cooks spent two nights throwing the scrub brushes at the rats to keep them fom getting the turkeys. Worked.  We had a good Thaksgiving… Anyone who was on Okinawa at that time can tell you the size of the rats, like medium sized dogs… No cats on the rock, I guess the rats got them… read more

Born on the Marine Corps Birthday

My Dad was a Marine Raider in WWII and rather proud of having a son born on November 10th….I did not realize what special celebrated day it is until I was in Boot Camp at Parris Island….and how my Drill Inst. paraded me around to all the Squad Bays in 2nd Batt. Through out my hitch in the Marines('68-'72) even in Vietnam it was hard for anyone to believe ,even until this day.On Marine sites on the web, Facebook, etc.I always was overwelmed by the way no matter where you were,Nam, Med. Cruise, Stateside, and now in Civiian life, what a celebrated day.Or maybe it is the caliber of people I choose for friends being a Marine.(most are Marines)…..God Bless …Semper Fi… Sgt V.T.Ryan Jr. read more

Fortunate Enough

Hello Sgt. Grit,

Just wanted to chime in on Marine Corps Birthday Ball pics. In
2007, my wife and I were fortunate to attend the 232nd Marine
Corps Birthday Ball in Fredericksburg, VA for the Combat
Development Command. Commandant Conway and future Commandant
General Amos were in attendance. We were fortunate enough to
have a few laughs with the Generals and get our pictures taken. read more

Before The Days

I served on active duty before the days of "Cammies"… we were  issued and wore "Utilities".    The utilities were an olive drab green with a herringbone design running through the very strong material. We never wore anything else until we finally graduated from basic training. Then, once  a Marine, we wore Marine Greens, Tropicals or Dress Blues…  depending on the "Uniform Of The Day".   Semper Fi, Bob MacGillivray Corporal Of Marines Platoon 63 "C" Company Third Marine Recruit Training Battalion Parris Island SC 1956

Last year I found an artist online, Justan “Sharpie” Carlson in Las Vegas and sent him graphics of the Marine Corps Emblem and Dali’s “Politicus: Child Watching the Birth of a Man.” Justan designed a mash up of the two and last April he tattooed me in an all night session. Next, a USMC banner in Dali style. read more
