Sgt Grit,

To continue my story, Fifty seven years ago I stood on the footprints at MCRD San Diego, seventeen years ago my son stood on those prints, five years ago one of my Grandsons took his turn, five weeks ago another Grandsoon had his turn. The ironic part of this is that all of us will have had their first duty station at 29 Palms, what are the odds? Needless to say am a very proud Marine,Marine father and Marine Grandfather. read more

Like Big Brother

Aiden Pettit, little brother of grand nephew Cpl. Kevin Pettit, worships his big brother.  So, when Kevin was married late in July, Aiden dressed in dress blues, to serve as ring bearer for Kevin's marriage to Paige.  Originally, the seamstress who tailored Aiden's uniform was just looking for the correct material, but a local recruiter came through by furnishing a WM blouse +.  Aiden is wearing a duplicate of Kevin's blouse, even to matching ribbons and marksmanship medals.  Kevin and Paige are stationed at Miramar.   Bob Rader God Bless America and the U.S. Marine Corps

The family “Black Sheep” now a “Black Widow”

Sgt Grit,

On June 24th, my brother, Lt. Col. Patrick Waugh, assumed command of MALS 13 "Black Widows" in Yuma, AZ.  I was honored to attend his change of command ceremony where he assumed command from Lt. Col. Gregory Clarke. My brother is six years younger than me and I recall how displeased he was when I entered the Marine Corps in 1978. He was just 13 at the time. I still look back and laugh at how he wouldn’t even say good bye to me the morning I left for Parris Island, because HE wanted to be the next Marine in the family. read more

LCPL Johnson and his nephew

Hey Sgt. Grit,   As always, I enjoy reading your great newsletter….all the stories really bring it home, and remind me how proud I am to be "One of The Few".   Several months ago, I sent you a picture of my nephew,  PFC Jason Johnson, and I, when I attended his graduation from MCRD San Diego, last October, almost exactly 48 years after I had graduated there. Well, he is now a L/Cpl and just got home for a 10 day leave after MOS School, before he reports to Miramar.    His Mom reports that was home less than 24 hours, and he was already trying to teach his 2 year old nephew how to say "Ooh-Rah", and I suspect that push-ups will be one of the next lessons. It appears we have yet another future Marine in training !!    I have to say, my nephew wanted to become a Marine from the time he knew what the word Marine meant. He followed his dream, worked hard, and accomplished his hearts desire. Already, you can tell that he has the dedication to, and love of The Corps that we all share. I am proud to have him as one of my Brother Marines.   Keep up the great work,   Patrick C. Verd Cpl. USMC – 1962-65

Marines Marrying Marines

It seems that there are more Marines marrying Marines, so I thought I would add my two bits: I met my husband at Cherry Point in 1965 on a blind date, a few days after his return from Viet Nam.  Six months later, on April 15, 1967, we were married in a beautiful church in beautiful downtown Morehead City, North  Carolina, by a minister who had a wonderful Scottish brogue. We were both PFCs, and our wedding rings were bought at the PX for a total of $20.00.  After the ceremony, we went to our small mobile home, where I cooked fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and veggies for the wedding party.  After dinner, and many toasts to the bride and groom, the wedding party crashed on the living room sofa and floor, and I passed out in bed with my maid-of-honor. It has been an interesting and wonderful life. We have a son (a computer engineer working for a government agency, who has twin boys, a daughter, and a grandson), and a daughter (living in Phoenix, who has four children and a grandson), all happy and healthy.  We just celebrated 44th years of continuous marriage, and I will never be able to say it wasn’t an interesting life.  I have attached a picture of the handsome Marine I married. read more

My Dad the Marine

Hi Kristy

Thank you!   I am actually writing you from Langley OK. I got a call on Monday morning that my Dad had taken a turn for the worse and I should probably head down to Oklahoma so I did an all nighter and got into Fairland Tuesday morning! I walked into to his room and there he was lying sleeping with his Marine Corps blanket!   Thanks again.
