I enlisted in the Marine Corps for four years the week I turned 18, in 1965. I served in Okinawa, Phu Bai, 29 Palms, and at the Marine Corps Recruiting Station in Seattle, Washington, where I was part of an Officer Selection Office (OSO) team. I was honorably discharged as a Sergeant, went to college, was a computer programmer, went to law school, and have practiced law for 32 years. The Marine Corps gave me discipline and determination, and I am proud to be a Marine.

USMC motto poem
Not yet in the Corps (1 more year 'til 17) but I have a bunch of buddies who are and I made this for them and the rest of our brothers stateside and overseas. The poem is not mine and I do not claim it as so. The pictures I got from Marines.com and put them on there as a visual for those who might see this and not understand.

The story in the March 28 newsletter, "What Saved Us", reminded me of another "Butterbar" encounter.
I was a wingwiper with VMFAT-101,an F4 Phantom squadron, at MCAS El Toro in '69 during which time a whole lot of Marines fresh from staging at Pendleton were being flown from El Toro to 'Nam. If you were one of the many you remember standing around in formations in parking lots or grassy areas by the barracks across the street from the flight line waiting for your platoons to board the chartered airliners.
