1. WHEN I ASSUMED DUTIES AS THE 33RD COMMANDANT OF THE MARINE CORPS ON 13 JANUARY 2003, I PUBLISHED MY GUIDANCE IN ORDER TO PROVIDE DIRECTION DURING THE FOLLOWING FOUR YEARS. TODAY, THE ENTIRE MARINE CORPS IS ENGAGED IN SUPPORTING THE GLOBAL WAR ON TERROR. WHILE THIS MISSION IS OUR NUMBER ONE PRIORITY, WE ALSO HAVE THE RESPONSIBILITY TO PREPARE FOR THE FUTURE. THIS MESSAGE UPDATES THE GUIDANCE OF 13 JANUARY BY LAYING OUT OUR VISION FOR THE 21ST CENTURY MARINE CORPS. ADDITIONALLY, IT CONTAINS MY INTENT FOR ACHIEVING THIS VISION. read more

From dropping hand grenades from the cockpits of bi-planes to the precision bombing of the AV-8B Harrier II, Marine Attack Squadron 231 has come a long way in its close-air support role.

Through three-quarters of a century, the Corps’ oldest squadron has developed a rich tradition of courage and spirit, sentiments reflected in the faces of the retired Marine Corps pilots who were here to celebrate the squadron’s 75th Anniversary in June. read more

A History of the Second Marine Division

1936-1940

Activated 1 July 1936 at San Diego, CA as the 2nd Marine Brigade, Fleet Marine Force, deployed during August-September 1937 to Shanghai, China. Relocated during February-April 1938 to San Diego, CA.

Re-designated 1 February 1941 as the 2nd Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force. Elements deployed to Iceland, July 1941-March 1942. Deployed to the South Pacific during January 1942-January 1943. Participated in the following World Ward II campaigns:
