One day in Comm. School while outside for equipment instruction on a "Black Flag" my Sgt. challenged us to a push up contest. I popped off and said I could do 2 for every 1 he did. The gung-ho Jr. Jump School Sgt. dropped and struggled to crank out 50 pushups, all he had, and in the scorching heat. The class crowded around to witness my move. Sgt. jumped up and said drop and get some. I dropped and did 2 pushups and got up, he looked stunned as did everyone else. Sgt. said you owe me another 98 private, I said no I gave you exactly what I said I would, 2 for every 1 you did. Pissed he began to scream at me to get down and get ‘em done. So I dropped pumped out 75 when our Gunny came over and chewed the Sgt's butt and wanted to know why he was making me train on a "Black Flag" day. Gunny continued yelling about how my Sgt. had better get me up, get me in the shade and get me something cool to drink so I didn't over heat and end up with heat stroke. Trust me I was fine and I could have done the 100, but I milked that moment for as much as I could. I even had my Sgt. tell me that I was a damn fine Marine! OOORAH!

TWAS THE DAY BEFORE CHRISTMAS
While forward deployed to Naples, Italy we (1st FAST Co. 3rd Platoon) were assigned to re-inforce a Naval installation in Gaeta Italy during Christmas & New Years 2000-2001. Half of the platoon were guarding the USS LaSalle while docked and the other half of us set up a reinforced perimeter on the small Naval base. During our time there, a number of us contributed to writing a ridiculous poem about Santa trying to get onto the base without his I.D.

I am always asked where I went to bootcamp. It was San Diego 1/2/70 because I lived on the West side of the Mississippi River. Then the discussion evolves into which Recruit Depot was the most difficult. My canned response is at Parris Island you had to be tough, at San Diego you had to be tough and pretty.
