I was sitting at home not expecting this mention,
As I watched the news and came to attention,
The words I was hearing would affect my life,
I couldn’t help looking across at my wife.
She was cooking a feast, taking care of our kids,
And hadn’t heard the words that I just did,
“Marines are recalled, effective right away,”
“Pack your gear, you’ll soon be on your way.”
Lying here beneath this ground
Never again to make a sound
When alive, they were so brave
And carried honor into the grave
They were all the best of men
Courage earned by all of them
Medals pinned upon their chest
At last the peace, of final rest
I was just a private with a rifle in my hand
Along with fellow Marines, we go to make our stand
The plane ride took forever as the tension filled the air
To a place called Vietnam, our country sent us there.
I’ve been on base, we’re packing up our ammo and some knifes
Heading out into the foreign fields where we could lose our lives
The jungle all around us, we’re crawling on the ground
The enemy is very near, and the sun is going down
A word in the house, a stroke of a pen
The country disbanded a fine body of men
With fighting finesse and fitness supreme
The creme de la creme wore berets of Green.
Their training was tough, it had to be so
How to fight with a knife and kill with one blow
Salerno, Vaagso, Dieppe and St Nazaire
With impossible odds the Commando’s were there.
No one ever thought
That our troop hearts will be
For many and for all
War is not easy and just
But if they can make a difference
Their mission will be done
Not many people agree with
This conflict afar
But their honor and commitment
Drives their courage within each other heart and pride
I am a sad marine.
Away from home, in Afghanistan.
Just trying to go back home,
With only a couple months to go.
Boom! I shoot myself
As I lie dead on the floor
My best friend soon tells the captain, I’m dead.
You can’t imagine what I’ve seen in the past months.
Some horrible things just every one getting bomb, exploding every were.
Now I’m up here looking down, and taking care of my family.
I should have listened to my dad.
He always knew right from the start,
That things this bad would happen.
I just want to tell my family, I’m in a better place.
So please don’t cry anymore.
To all I want to say bye, bye.
SI sit by myself thinking how long,
How long he will be gone this time,
Even though I know he is good at what he does, You can’t help but worry.
So I sit quietly and think,
Will he be okay?
Will he stay safe?
You can’t help but wonder.
So today is the day,
He’s leaving once more,
The sad expression on my face says all,
He’s off to war.
There once was a President named Bush
Who was smarter than he look’s
He took a job that’s hard to do
Worrying about me and you
911 was hard to view
What should we do?
He gave a speech
He said what we felt
Gave action to our feelings
Men and women are fighting now
We hate the losses and how
It’s a necessary sacrifice
To show our will
To crush the evil, more blood will spill
I had no Christmas spirit when I breathed a weary sigh, and looked across
the table where the bills were piled too high.
The laundry wasn’t finished and the car I had to fix, My stocks were down
another point, the Dolphins lost by six.
And so with only minutes till my son got home from school, I gave up on the
drudgery and grabbed a wooden stool.
The burdens that I carried were about all I could take, and so I flipped the
TV on to catch a little break.
From battlefields of the past
To those currently in the news
Marines have fought to defend our land
And to protect our Liberties
Uncommon Valor is that common thread
That runs throughout The Corps
Binding each generation of new Marines
With those who have gone before
Where do they come from
And why do they fight
always willing to pay the price
For freedom isn’t free my friend
It often requires the ultimate sacrifice
