Longest spike of head piece: 70  feet
Torch and flame combined: 980  feet
Number of men in flame of torch:  12,000
Number of men in torch:  2,800
Number of men in right arm:  1,200?
Number of  men in body, head and balance of figure only:  2,000

  1. Photos like this were made by Mole & Thomas (circa 1918). There’s even one of the Marine Corps emblem using over 9,000 Marines. The photos were made from approx 80 foot towers and directed by flag and megaphone, using strips of cloth staked out on the ground to create the image.

    In the Statue of Liberty photo, contemporary news accounts tell it was made in early July 1918 and the troops, wearing wool uniforms, were in 105 degree heat.

    Recalling how challenging it was just to get troops into any formation – just falling out for chow or morning report – an NCO can appreciate the logistics involved.
