Native American Heritage Month

We begin #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth by recognizing a Marine who led the way for future generations. In 1943, Minnie Spotted Wolf became the first Native American woman to enlist in the United States Marine Corps Women’s Reserve. Having grown up driving two-ton trucks and breaking horses on her father’s ranch near Heart Butte, Montana, Spotted Wolf said her upbringing prepared her for the rigors of Marine Corps boot camp, which she found “hard, but not too hard”. In true Marine spirit, no challenge was too tough. Upon her discharge from the service, Spotted Wolf would continue serving her community by teaching elementary education for 29 years. 2. Thank you for your dedicated service to a country that treated Native Americans so horribly. You are truly a strong woman, and I salute you as a woman and and as a wife of my late Marine husband.
God Bless you and keep you well if you are still with us.

  3. Some would beg to differ. For a true NATIVE born AMERICAN WOMAN to willingly choose to fight for this country at that specific period time in our countries history is by itself worthy of “The MEDAL OF HONOR”.

To her, and ALL NATIVE BORN “AMERICANS” that knowingly willingly chose to sacrifice themselves for my freedom , I am forever humbled and honored by your sacrifice. I realize that to the world this doesn’t mean much. As a United States MARINE, I HUMBLY SALUTE YOU.

  4. I love these stories of our Marines that don’t otherwise get recognition. This one, Minnie Spotted Wolf, was tough and hardened prior to Boot Camp. She’d do well today as an 0311. God Bless you Marine, Semper Fi.
ps: I hope she can see these responses.

  5. Thank you Minnie Spotted Wolf for your bravery & service. You are a shining example for other American Indian women to enter the armed services for many reasons. I’m proud of you.

  6. Semper Fidelis Minnie Spotted Wolf!! Wopida Tanka (Thank you) for paving the way for all of our Native American Winyans (Women).

May the Creator continue bless you and your family.

  7. Happy Birthday sister, I’m also a Native Marine and proud to hear of other Native Marines serving the Marine Corps.
