A Marine You Should Know – Cpl Scherer
Cpl Christopher G. Scherer, USMC, KIA 21 July 2007, Operation Iraqi Freedom. My son is “A Marine You Should Know”.
When Lieutenant Colonel Wayne Sinclair spoke at Chris?s funeral he said the following: ?Chris?s platoon commander called him the most likable marine in the platoon, no one griped or had a bad day if Cpl Scherer had anything to say about it. Lieutenant Douglas Orr told me that though the living conditions in the field have been harsh over the past two months, and the marines have been working and fighting in 120 degree temperatures while wearing body armor and carrying ammunition, weapons, water, and equipment that typically weighs over 70 pounds for each marine, he never heard Chris complain or even question their circumstances – not once. NOT EVER.?
Lt Col Sinclair further stated: ?Lt Orr also shared with me some of the unique traits that Chris’ mates will forever remember him for. For starters, there was his sense of humor – paradoxically at its best when stress and privation were highest. Most notably, he had an uncanny ability to lift spirits with his voice impressions. He was a superb mimic of more actor?s voices and accents than anyone could count. One of his favorites was that from the movie Jaws? After seeing the size of the shark, Chief Brody says to Captain Quint. ?You?re gonna need a bigger boat.? He would often say this when things got particularly rough.?

Dear Scherers,
I thank God for your son, for his service and for your sharing this here. Knowing his fine example, leadership and gift of encouragement from those who served with him, and who will always carry and be guided by his memory, I hope gives you some solace. I say these things having likewise lost my only son, Donald, 23, three years ago.
Thank you for the life and sacrifice of your son. Sounds like a Marines Marine. The world could use more like him.

Dear Tim and Janet:
In all the years that I have been reading Sgt. Grit, this is the first time that I can recall having read a letter from a Dad/Mom “team”. It is apparent from your heartfelt and poignant words that not only was your son an outstanding Marine, but it is also obvious that one of the reasons why he was extra special was the strong foundation provided by YOU! His drill instructors had an easy time molding him into a Marine because he was well on his way when he arrived at MCRD.
I would have loved having him in my rifle platoon or rifle company.

Look forward to meeting and shaking your hand Corporal, Semper Fi brother. Sgt. Paul Mancuso, Vietnam
As a former Marine and Vietnam Vet my heart goes out to you. I have a son who was in Iraq and Afganistan I can’t wrap my head around losing him. I know the pride you must have in this young man and the loss you must feel. Its young men like him that keep this country free. God bless you both and may God ease your pain. Forever in your debt Sgt. Paul T. Forbes
Mr. & Mrs. Scherer: Met you at the Marine Corps Marathon several years ago. You had a group running for “Team Chris” and presented me with a “Team Chris” coin, though I was running independent and not with your group. As I compose this email I currently am looking at the coin in my Marine Corps man cave. You were unaware that I was a former Marine. I would like you to know that I’m a Viet Vet 67-68 and continue to run the Marine Marathon in memory of those KIA in Vietnam. After meeting you, I incorporated Chris into my memorial run. God willing this fall will be my 41st Marine Corps Marathon in memory of our KIA Brothers. Would like you to know Chris will be in my heart and soul during this great challenge. God Bless
RIP Brother
