Scooter in Afghanistan
Pictures that my son, "Scooter" David M. Bombard Jr., sent me from Afghanistan, I thought that you might like to see them. They are PICS that when Toby Keith (the country singer) was there and performed for the troops / Marines.

Don't let Mike slide by you. He was an outstanding welder. Took pieces off a code X'd tractor and resurrected other tractors.

To my Vietnam Veteran dad.
My hero and father,
Protector and friend.
In Vietnam you fought,
In Vietnam you lost, many a friend
But you never forgot.
You vowed to keep a distance
The product of the war.
But we loved you so much
We couldn’t walk out the door.
You told us to be ready
You told us to be brave.
That you would soon descend
Your temporary grave.

BEING A D.I. AT P.I.
I just read the 3 May News Letter and am replying to "FORMER HAT.. August 1979 to Nov 1980, I was at PISC on my second tour as a Drill Instructor with "B" Co, 1st Bn (1st Tour was in "A" Co 1st Bn) I was honored to have been on the same Island as Lieutenant Colonels Livingston and Barnum, both being holders of the MOH. However, in 1st Bn we had LtCol Ron Christmas who was a Navy Cross holder for service at Hue. When we would have a Friday Parade Col Christmas would march us out on the Parade deck and leave us at Attention and go and salute the other two Bn Co's, return and give us At Ease.

Weight loss in boot camp
Dear Sgt Grit,
…I saw the postings about trying to pack weight on recruits. June-Aug 1968 at MCRD San Diego I went through the same.
…First pic of rifle issue… taken June 13, 1968, day after we arrived. As I am handed my first rifle, I am 5'10"… 130 lbs. Less than a month later (see second photo in ranks) I had dropped to 110 lbs.
My son’s 2nd Grade Reading Log
Dear Sgt. Grit,
I just happened to look down at my kitchen table to find a reading log for my son who is in 2nd grade. My wife fills it out after he reads everyday and he has to submit to his teacher.
Take note of the April 12th entry (Sgt. Grit Catalog). I asked my wife about it and she said she told him to go do his reading for the day, when she looked over into the family room, sure enough his was reading your catalog so that's what she entered in the log.
