Korea-6

These are some pictures my daughter took on our visit to Korea, in September/October 2010.

The first is the vacant city in N. Korea, unoccupied and supposedly built for propaganda.

The second & third & fourth is a marker relating to the massacre of officers when they were there to trim a tree in the DMZ and the location of the tree. read more

Sgt Grit,

Enjoy your E-mails & your store. Reading this week's E-mails in regards to Mike Shaw's letter about SgtMaj Linehan. Never knew the man personally but I do know his widow quite well. She's a member of our Detachment for which the Detachment is named. I'm a 4th. term Commandant for the SgtMaj Linehan Detachment #1034 here in Lewiston, Idaho. His wife is a Marine also, that's how they met. read more

Quonset Huts

Sgt Grit,

I was assigned to C & E Bn D Co; Basics Electronics School at San Diego MCRD May 1967; these are the remnants of the Quonset huts that remain in that area now. This picture was taken almost 40 years to the day later from when I was transferred to San Diego for school. The huts are currently used as training huts for weapons trainings. The second one is my old living quarters for 6 months until we were transferred to 29 Palms MCB in December 1967. read more

Russell A. Smith

Dear Sgt. Grit,   I am submitting the below in hopes that you can get the word out to the other 4th Marine Division Marines about their brother Russell A. Smith.  This is going to appear in the Emerald Empire Detachment # 917, Marine Corps League, January 2012 Newsletter.  Russell was a member of our detachment, and I was contacted by Fred Smith in hopes of helping with information to get Russell the deserved funeral service for a Marine and Iwo Jima Bronze Star recipient.     Submitted by Paul Grinde, Commandant, Emerald Empire Detachment # 917, Marine Corps League

D.I. LOST HIS FOOTING

You old Drill Instructors are gonna hate this one but it's true, can you all take the truth? Anyway the setting is Boot Camp three day war games summer of 1975. We had pretty much settled after a hard day and we're camping out on a hillside and are out until who knows when. Well we hadn't got two hundred yards before we got ambushed ourselves. I figure we were set up anyway. Well since I was the leader all 120 lbs and 5' and 7" I got jumped by what I thought was another recruit. I should have known better because the guy that jumped me had a starched cover and real camo paint on but idiot me didn't know better. The D.I. tried to throw me down to the ground and being an Irish Indian I didn't take kindly to having what I thought was a recruit from another platoon manhandling me so I did what came naturally and put that D.I. right on the ground and all I did was trip him up. Well that D.I. came up off the deck like it was on fire and started firing me up. Well I'll give the D.I. credit hew was about my size and my height and maybe he did slip with my help. Well we all got captured and put in a hole in the ground until one of those San Onofre grass fires started so they needed the prisoners to help put it out. Anyway you would think that a recruit that put his hands on a D.I. would have been on his way to the brig, no nothing happened not a damn thing. I do think I know why that D.I. is gonna have it get out that shower shoe put his ass on the ground. Anyway good thing it was dark and only a game because if it had been war Mr. D.I. would have been put in a body bag but then again they did have the drop on us from the start. And it was during the Carter years. read more

Christmas in Korea 1954

Hey Sgt Grit,

I found this pic of me (on the left) and 2 buddies celebrating Xmas in Korea in 1954.  Notice the 'utilities' with the old WWII herringbone pattern worn by Marines in those days.  Today you can't tell a Marine from a sailor, soldier or airman with the camo design covering up the service designation.  Almost makes you wanna cry! I guess I'm considered "Old Corps" by todays crop of gyrenes.  Check out the containers we're using to hold our brews.  No glasses available out in the boondocks.   Happy New Year and Semper Fi to all.   Jack Strumpf 1366077 Sgt USMC '53 – '56
