The old marines landed at San Diego on Sept 17th,18th and 19th for a 3rd Battalion, 11th Marines reunion. It started on thursday night with a get together and reaquaintance period for those of us that hadn't seen each other in 40 plus years. Most of the vets were from the Viet Nam era, with two old timers from Korea. Friday was a special treat, a large group of us boarded a bus and went to MCRD for the recruit graduation. What an impressive sight to see 566 recruits become new marines. Oh did they stand tall and have very wide smiles when the ceremony was over. I was able to chat with a few of them about their feelings of being marines. Everyone of them couldn't quit grinning and expressing a gratitude that boot camp was over. All of the command staff present, Lt. Colonel, Sgt Major down were in fantastic shape and left a positive impression that the Corp is in better shape than when we were in. We were honored to have Cpl. Steiner for our guide around the base. Ladies and gentlemen our corp is still in very good hands and will continue to do so with the fine young men and women enlisting today. We were even allowed PX and store privileges, yes, it cost us all a lot of money. I noticed some very large bags being carried out of the store with various goodies, shirts and jackets seemed the most popular. After 6 hours we went back to the hotel with lighter wallets. The memories will stay forever and my wife even commented on what a great experience it was to see these young men in all their glory, marching tall and proud on the old parade deck.

Iron Mike
Hey Sgt. Grit I just returned from my Mike Co. Reunion. I wanted to thank you for the items you donated for our Reunion. A great time was had by All. Our Members are getting older average age is hitting around mid to high 60. Our Guset speaker was "Iron Mike" Mervosh, Sgt Major USMC (Ret). If you have heard of him you know that he is a three War Veteran, [ wwll, korea, Vietnam} Now in his eighties, he was at one time The Most Senior Enlisted Man, of all the Services. When he retired in 1977.
Parris Island Platoon 151 Reunion
Our Parris Island Platoon 151 graduated on Sept. 25, 1962 and just completed our 3rd Reunion. This gathering was meaningful because during the past year we found the family of D.I. Sgt. Murphy who had passed away in 1967. The photo includes his wife and two sons along with D.I.s Snogles and Gartside and our platoon members. Sgt. Murphy's wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were able to attend and celebrate the contributions of all our Drill Instructors to the Marines that we became. We attended an impressive Graduation on Friday with followup visits to the Depot on Saturday along with golfing and sightseeing. Several of our members had so much fun at previous reunions that they brought their own military friends to celebrate with us. One of these was a D.I. for one of our platoon members who was reassigned after a medical event. Proving once again just how small the Marine World really is. Steve Price, a Marine himself and local Living History Instructor, gave us an interesting presentation on Marine Corp history. The bonds of our collective Parris Island experience continue to this day and we acknowledge our connection to all Marines past, present and future. SemperFi Marines!

Meeting a general
I took the roadster over to the store to get a 7up ande some pogie bait for the weekend. As I drove in some old guy in a suit bowed and gave me a short round of applause. I said hi and then looked at his hat. It said ROK but he had a 1st Marine Division pin. I showed him the EGA on my shorts and we got to talking. This dude had some war stories. I asked him if I could take his picture and he was very happy to say yes. He shared some of his pictures and there were pictures of Marines with him. He was at some 1st Mar Div Function in Oceanside. His friend came out of the store and we had a good conversation also. When I asked if I could take his picture he said yes. He went to the car and got his coat, he is a GENERAL. I'll send you the pictures, they are on the phone.
4TH JULY CONCERT WITH JOSH GRACIN (FORMER MARINE)
A former Marine LCPL in the 1st Force Service Support Group put on one heck of a concert on the 4th of July at River Wind Casino in Norman, Oklahoma. Not to mention it was free!
And to show his patriotic spirit he was signing autographs and taking pictures with all his fans.
The VFW – Philly GritTogether
I was invited to a gathering last night along with about 11 other former Marines.
We met at a VFW club in Philly on Martin's Mill Rd.
I am not a member of the VFW and have never been to a VFW club, so this was a first.
Plenty of parking, cool central air, pool table, a couple of flat-screens with the Phils getting clobbered, shuffle board, darts, and a boatload of men mostly my age enjoying each others company is what I discovered.
