Tnx, Grit !!
I read your story this week about the club waitresses at 11th Marines while you were in Da Nang, and you mentioned the Da Son ville…Funny, because 11th Marine Regt took over the CP from 12th Marines when we all departed Da Nang to move up north to the DMZ areas in the summer of '66…I had been a Corporal with 3rd Marine Regt – Comm back then, and our CP was just down the road, after you made the left at "3 Corners" on the back way out to Red Beach…When we re-deployed up to Artillery Plateau (re-named Camp Carroll later that year on the Marine Corps birthday) there was an Army infantry unit that had moved into our CP, but when I went back again in '69, 11th MT Bn was there…
Another Vehicle
Sgt. Grit,
In keeping with the vehicle stories in your recent newsletters, attached find a photo of the PC we used at 9th Engineer Battalion to haul our survey gear during the work week and our bodies to the beach in Chu Lai on Sundays. S-3 Section building is behind the PC (passenger carrier). I drove and serviced this vehicle many times during 1967. Jim Harris, former Lance Corporal, always a Marine Semper Fidelis to God, Family, Country and CorpsBar Girls at 11th. Marines
I believe we served at An Hoa together in 1969, so I am sending a picture of the bar girls that I have. I picked out a few other pictures that may look familiar to you. There are 2 pictures of a Marine named Ray receiving his NCO stripes, arms and legs, that should bring back memories. I wonder if they still do that. There are a couple of pictures of me with scrapnel and a midwife at the orphanage I spent a lot of time at. The rest are pictures of An Hoa and people you may or may not be familiar with.
Teaching Vietnam
Dear Sgt. Grit,
For the last ten years I have been asked to give a talk about Vietnam to history classes. A few years ago a teacher told me her class was reading "The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brien and wondered if I could talk to her students and give them a little better understanding of what they were reading.
III MAF Press Center
Beginning July 1969 I served at the Press Center across the river from III MAF HQ. Lived in the compound until Mach 70. Served with a S/Sgt named Dale Dye who is now a big time technical advisor and actor in many recent big screen movies. I reunited with Dale (Big Daddy DA) again in about 1985 in Malibu at a friend of ours Gary Sheppard's home, who was working for ABC in LA. LIke DA would say it was ablast from the past. Lots of good memories when I was "one of his kids". Thats how he referred to us rookies. He always treated us with respect and I will never forget.
ROCKPILE
I was in Camp Carroll from 1966 to 1967 also spent some time on the Rockpile. My nickname Rockape.
Photos from Vietnam
Here's a couple of the photos. I think the girl on the left is the girl you said got married.

1st night in country & bud at the club
Another FNG story, I reported in country and was picked up by 7th Comm. when we arrived I reported in and the gunny showed me an area to rack out and stow my gear and that it was late so after a quick orientation on what to do in the event of Rockets etc. he told me to go to the E club for a beer and we would finish checkin the next AM. So after I got my gear in line I went up to the club (pic attached) ordered a Bud and no sooner opened the can and started to take a big swig the 175's on the next hill started firing. needless to say i covered my clean utilities with beer and just about soiled my skivies, not realizing it was outgoing not incoming. everyone in the club got a good laugh out of the FNG. speaking of the club it was nice, Story goes it was paid for with insurance $ by a L/Cpl's mother. he was with a tank Co at an earlier time and was killed on that hill. Officers tried to take it over but she made sure it stayed enlisted because her son was not an officer. If anyone knows the story and the name maybe they can fill in the blanks. my memory isn't the best . Ron Preuss Sgt 2233915 RVN 68-69
Soggy Welcome
I arrived at Danang on the Marine Corps birthday in 1968. There was a steady rain falling. We FNG's made our way to the Transit Barracks, and passed by a table, with a half eaten cake, covered by a wind blown canopy. Once inside we chose our bunks and waited to be assigned to our Units. An E5 approached me and asked that I get three buddies for a "detail". He then told the four of us to grab our ponchos and he handed us two broom handles. He then walked us out to the back side of the "shitters", lifted the hinged hatch and told us to thread the broom handles through the holes which had been cut near the top of the 55 gallon drums (cut in 1/2 for depository purposes). We proceeded to slosh our way' to the distant "burn area" and ignited the fuel & feces. We made several trips. What a warm welcome it was.
