Friday by Boat

The way I left MCAS Kaneohe in JANUARY 1963 was, I rescued a
tourist surfer in Waikiki. He got hit in the head by another
novice surfer, a blond, who just took off. I pulled his head out
of the water and asked him his name.

No response, outta of it. I put him on his board and toe towed
him to the beach yelling for help.

A life guard came out and we got him to the beach. A cop saw the
number of the board I rented and got my name etc … (one of the
few times I used my real name renting a board).

I got called to the Gunny’s office (a replacement for the pr-ck
Gunny… and a good thing too) the following Monday and was told
the police were filing some sort of charge & the victim was
suing me cause they thought I did the deed.

After explaining the events etc… the Gunny said “Wednesday by
C-54 or Friday by boat?” and that’s how I left Hawaii.

  1. Just goes to show you, Lee, no good deed goes unpunished. Having been assigned to Comm Support Company, 7th Comm Bn, 1st Marine Brigade at MCAS Kaneohe Bay from ’72-’75, I enjoyed the story and the picture. It is now called Marine Corps Base Hawaii and MCAS is a tenant. Looking at it on Google Earth is amazing because of all the reconstruction. The duplex where I lived at 1958B Hansen Circle no longer exists, having been replaced with fourplexes. One thing I could never get used to while assigned in Hawaii was wearing Aloha shirts on Friday, regardless of uniform. Looked kind of silly in utilities. Semper Fi!!! Top Pro

  2. Fuckin A nice picture! They mean business! Looking very sharp and squared away in them khakis! Just itching for some ass to kick! OOHRAHH!

  3. I lived in those open squad bays 222 series barracks as well. Just steps away from Pless Hall (Chow/Mess Hall) for old Corps.

  4. Looks like the CCU just outside and closest to Pless hall! My barracks was next to the CCU and we could see the fuck ups getting harrased just like in boot camp all over again! Boy did we feel sorry for them! OOHRAHH!

  5. I recognize those barracks. That was my home for a few months until i got quarters on the north shore, five miles shy of the “Pipe line” along with a few other Marines. 74 – 78 it was good duty for a young Jar head. once i made NCO i got in bass housing, witch is all history. MAG-24 MAB-24 OOHRAHH!
