DDick sends in way too much stuff for the newsletter…..so here is a picture…..probably taken in 1963, definitely in L Company area at MCRD, SD……..that's DDick holding(inspecting) the rifle….will have to dig out and go through platoon books to ID the recruit (I think he was a Squad Leader at the time…)
Pvt Joseph. C. Gambino…..Plt 313, 20 March-30 May 1963. SSGT W.R. Penisten was the Platoon Commander, other JDI was Sgt. Francisco F. Cablay (“You Privates got ‘zactly, ‘proximately three minutes to make a head call”)
Whose that raking the grass in the background?
He is sweeping. Hello
Better adjust those “four” eye specks, it’s a broom!
That wasn’t grass, it was ice plant
That DI is Sgt Richardson, he was my DI in 1963, in San Diego
Oh man, the “Tropicals” bring back so many memories. The summer uniform. I don’t know what caused them to be gone. Anybody have an answer to my question? Semper Fi!
Sometime in Nov., 1970 I was on my way back from my 2nd tour in Vietnam. I picked up my sea bag in Okinawa and was told no more tropical trousers and I would have to buy new green trous-made of a different material. Go ahead and shit can that stuff and buy the new stuff when you get back to the states. I think my clothing allowance was still around $15.00 per month. Thankfully, I had some back pay coming. I was flow n to Hawaii in a C-141 with 12 other guys and switched to a civilian air liner. Customs stopped me and made me dump everything out of my sea bag because it looked so light. Afraid of smuggling cigarettes I was told even though the plane I was getting on was a MAC flight to Norton AFB. Yes, the C-141 was empty except for the hand full of us. It was going to reload with other things to go back to Vietnam. A couple of years later they issued the patton leather shoes, at our expense, of course.
I remember walking guard duty in the rain and the tropicals when wet would stink.
I went through MCRD SD June-Sept of ’71 and we were issued both trops and khakis. I got out in June ’75 in my trops. The new guys had the lightweight summer greens. I always thought they were sharp looking. They should bring them back.
I thought that all the real Marines came from PI?
They DID !
Went through boot camp at PI in 1954 and we were issued trops, and wore them until getting out in 1957. Also had the HBT utilities.
Chuck Gibson, Was at PI Nov 53 to Jan 54. Plt 440.I was isued trops. Good looking uniform.
THE PI MARINES THOUGTH THEY WAS REAL UNTIL THEY RAN UP AND DOWN THE HILL’S OF CAMP PENDELTON. MY BOOT CAMP WAS MCRD SAN DIEGO PLT 3311 SEPT-NOV1966.
There is downhill at Pendleton?? It seemed like it was all uphill.
plt 2108 mcrd sandiego camp Pendleton 82-93 says I was discharged from H/S 1/8 AFTER 18months 11 years 0311. I thought I was walking not HUMPING.
I was at PI in “62”. We were issued brown dress shoes. Half way through boot we were told the color was now black. We were given dye and had to make the change.
Gosh I was Plt 2108, G Co. MCRD SD , Jun 1969. I was stationed at Camp Pendleton for 8 months in 1970 and we only did one little 20 mile walk on the flats in that whole time. Of course I was with Hq. Co. (NUC), 4th MarDiv.
Great picture brings back memories. I went through MCRD San Diego with plt. 2002 started in Dec. 1961. The difference was M-1 and brown shoes. Tropicals were a good looking uniform.
