Infantry Song

Sgt. Grit I am writing to you in hopes that you can help me. I would like to have a copy of the words to the infantry song chesty puller was a merry old soul. Its a infantry song that was sang to the nursery rhyme of old king cole,. We use to sing it back in 1991 when I was with the 3rd Marine Regiment, 1st. meb kaneheo bay hawaii . Any help you can give me with this would be greatly appreciated. I try to sing this to my 6 yr. old when he goes to bed. I’m not sure if its right though. Thank you in advance for your help.

Sgt. Robert Norton, USMC 1980-1993

This is the verse that I am familiar with, there may be more and there maybe slightly different versions. Gunny D

Chesty Puller was a fine Marine
And a fine Marine was he.
He called for his pipe,
He called for his bowl,
He called for his privates three.
“Beer, beer, beer,” said the privates.
“Merry old men are we.
There’s nothing so fair that it can compare to Marine Corps infantry”

  1. 79-80 We sang that tune a little differently….Chesty Puller was a merry old soul….And a merry old soul was he. Instead of “There’s nothing so fair”….We sang “The Army is fair but they can’t compare….To the Marine Corps Infantry”!

    1. Yep the way we sung it in 81 was about the Army too. Along with “the prettiest girl I ever saw was sipping bourbon through a straw” went down hill from there pretty fast! All time favorite was crushing the birds head,,,I actually heard the PC animal activists raised cane and the Corps caved and quit singing it as a cadence!!!

  2. ” He was born in a shelter half at Camp Lejuene; He eats his C rats with a plastic spoon; His Father was a gunny; His Mother was a Bamm; His sister sleeps with members of the Marine Corps band! Lifer, motorscooter, Lifer won’t you kiss my ass!

  3. The next verse he calls for his Corporals Three. Hut, two, three says the Corporal. Then he calls for his Lts Three. Where’s my map and compass says the Louie.

  4. Sorry, can’t help you on this one, the songs we sang, back in the day, would not be appropriate for bed time, unless you want to scar your children for life ! Our’s had something to do with an Eskimo woman, as I recall.

    1. Cpl. Jerry Allen 1st light support company, 29 Palms Calif. 58-61 The song with the Eskimo lady was being song back in 1958. Is not a song to be discussed at the dinner table.

  5. The higher the mountain, the greener the grass, the bigger the woman, the better the azz, sound off, 1 2 3 4 MARINE CORPS —ALL THE WAY.

  6. Not being a grunt, we sang the Mickey Mouse Club theme song in the mess hall kitchen when on mess duty awaiting Instruction for Basic Electronic School at MCRD San Diego, 1963.

  7. Rusty, don’t know if you were at Camp Le juene, but I was(1964/65, H 2/8). Your post really brought back memory’s. We used to sing that song marching to wherever we were going. Thanks for the memory. L/cpl H. Young, RVN 64/65/69

    1. Mr. Young:Glad to share good memories. I was at Camp Geiger 76-77, H.Q. Co. (Comm) 8th Marines.I also remember the eskimo women, as well as the girl from New Orleans, and the girl with the 40 inch bust. There were also references to coke machines and submarines. There was also the song, to the tune of “My Darling Clementine”: Sgt. Major, ship me over; I’m a lifer in the Corps. First you love me like a mother, then you ( common adjective inserted) me like a whore!

  8. Marine if you want the original why don’t you call the 3D Marines or go on their Facebook page. They have to have one. Sgt. Dan Daly A Co. 1st. Engineer Bn. RVN 6/67-7/68. 11. I don’t remember it all, but in Okinawa in 1960, it started out… Oh the eagle globe and anchor of the Corps, we’re the young men who know the score. We’re hired professional killers, we love to pillage, rape and burn. That’s all i remember

There is another verse, but out of room

  13. I was stationed at KMCAS also in ‘67-‘68, but never had the opportunity to hear this catchy tune. After my tour in Vietnam, I was assigned to Barbers Point, but didn’t have the security clearance needed for my duty, so was assigned to Kaneohe Bay!:-). Semper Fi………….Sgt. Al Scott. ‘64’-‘70

  14. Here’s how we sang it: “CHESTY PULLER WAS A GOOD MARINE AND A GOOD MARINE WAS HE. HE CALLED FOR HIS CHAIR AND HE CALLED FOR HIS PIPE AND HE CALLED FOR HIS PRIVATES THREE. BEER, BEER BEER SAID THE PRIVATES, SUCH MERRY OLD MEN ARE WE, WELL THERES NONE SO FAIR THAT THEY CAN COMPARE TO THE MARINE CORPS INFANTRY” Then it went on with Chesty calling up each rank with “HUP ONE HUP TWO SAID THE CORPORALS”, “WAR, WAR, WAR SAID THE SERGEANTS”, “HOW BOUT A THREE DAY PASS SAID THE GUNNYS”, “WHERE IS THE MAP SAID THE LOUIE” sorry but this formatting won’t let me create a new line.
