I want to hear how many pull ups you started out doing in boot camp and how many you could do by the time you graduated.

    1. I can not remember, but I do remember I did better on PT test when I first got there than I did when I left. I was so beat down when I left PI. Maybe it was because when I first got there they scared the crap out of me. I thought I was on another planet.

      1. When I went in I maxed out on everything on graduation I remember I didn’t and caught hell. Boot camp did me in. Before I came in I worked in a steel mill 2 years and was in really good shape.

In 1966 with my 36 inch long arms, starting at a dead hang and doing pull-ups (palms facing away from your chin) not the chin-ups (palms facing toward you) I could only do 3 the then minimum amount on the then PRT (Physical Readiness Test) when I arrived at Bootcamp. By, then time graduation came around I was doing 16.

I remember very well how many pull ups and push ups I could do when I got to Parris Island.I was probably in the worst shape of any member in my platoon.Zero is the number on both pull ups and push ups.My D.I.s never recycled me to another platoon and never let up on me.I was able to do 50 push ups and 10 pull ups when I graduated

  3. Entered boot at SD in 2 Feb. 1968. First test I was only able to do 2 or 3 because I couldn’t straighten my elbow after getting blood drawn (took almost a week before I could straighten it!) On the final PT test, I maxed out. I think it was 25. I maxed out on every test except the 200 yard dash: push ups, squat thrusts (timed), sit-ups (timed) & pull ups. I was feeling pretty good that day!

  5. Do not remember the number on the first test. But on t-29 I had pulled a muscle going over forward leaning wall on the obstacle course, could only do the minimum 3 so did 99 squat thrusts to make my points. No way was I going to STP.

  6. I could do about 30 when I got to boot camp and about 40 by the time I left. Grew up on a dairy farm and during the 3 to 4 minutes after I changed the “milkers” from one set of cows to the next, I did push-ups or pull-ups to kill time and get in shape. I could do almost 100 push-ups in about 3 minutes the day I got to boot camp. Should have worked a little more on the sit-ups. 50 cramped my style and I had never heard of bends-and-thrusts! But I found a lot of things in the Marine Corps I had never heard of or thought about before. Semper Fi! Do or Die!

  7. I was 22years old, 6’4 195Lbs could do 6 at the start , then 10 when graduated. The most by anyone my height.

  8. Could barely do the 3 required at first. Got 17 by the end of recruit training. Got 20 plus in the years to follow until my back and shoulder went out.

  9. Greetings. 3 pull-ups when I arrived at my summer resort in South Carolina in 73 and upon graduation a strong 12 pull-ups. My DI was nice enough to let me hang on the pull up bar almost every nite until he got tired . Semper Fi

  10. After 53 years I don’t remember how many I did only that it was never enough for our DI’s. I must have got better because I was able to do enough of everything to pass the final fitness test. PI, Platoon 215, 1966…Bob 1381

  11. I think it was 15 at start of bootcamp, 25-30 at final PT test at graduation. Only saving grace was I only weighed 150-155 #. By the time I came back to CONUS in 1961, I weighed 185#.

  12. I ran track in high school mostly did not have much upper body strength so i probably could not do to many when I got to boot but just like Harry 1371 stated I did pass PT and graduated that’s what matters. Bill 0331

  13. How in the hell do you guys remember how many fn pull ups you did ?I find that fn AMAZING !!
    After almost 53 years I can’t even remember doing pull ups! I’m sure I did ,but damn if I remember Nick

  14. I was in good shape when I went to PI for the only reason I did sports (Wrestling) in all my 4 years of High school. I did 12 pull ups when I got in and 12 when I got out. Also I was 178 pounds when I went to PI and left at 165 pounds. 1972-1974 USMC

  15. I recall doing 4 in my PRT. I got the 4th one after I saw the DI in front of me put on his black leather gloves and make a fist ! Motivation!

    I weighed 165 LBS. On the initial PFT I did 120 sit-ups, 24 pull ups. On the final PFT I did the same. I scored highest for the series 293/300. Meritorious promotion to PFC. S/F. SSGT. Tony Woconish 76-‘82.

  17. MCRD San Diego – Platoon 1055 – MRP – Graduated Platoon 2059. Class of 91.

    Think I did about 12 pull-ups on IST – was 20 / 80 upon Graduation & pretty much remained at this level for the rest of my four years.
