MARINE OF THE WEEK // FOUGHT OFF 200 TALIBAN:

Cpl. Jason D. Jones
Embedded Training Team 5-3
Afghanistan, July 13, 2008
Award: Silver Star

While embedded with two Marines and a U.S. Army platoon alongside the Afghan National Army, Cpl. Jones and the coalition forces came under an intense, coordinated predawn attack from an estimated 200 enemy forces. He calmly returned suppressive fires while encouraging the Afghan soldiers to deliver well-aimed defensive fires. Seeing a seriously wounded Afghan soldier in the open, he and another Marine ran across 35 meters of open ground to drag him back to their position, where Jones treated his life-threatening wounds. When a U.S. Army squad manning an observation post was in danger of being overrun after suffering heavy casualties, Jones and a fellow Marine crossed 130 meters of fire-swept ground with a M-240B machinegun and ammunition that proved vital to repelling the attack. Jones constantly exposed himself to grenades and fires from the attackers as he provided lifesaving first aid to several of the wounded U.S. soldiers. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl. Paul Zellner)

  1. Great job Marine! Not sure of criteria for Valor awards but since it involved U.S. Army maybe the Army Distinguished Service Cross as well. Just a thought. SEMPER FI! Harry 1371

      1. Kevin Amburn, were you with Lima 3/8? Guy from Tennessee ? Remember me? Mike Kunkel. We were 0331’s together in Weapons platoon. Semper Fi!

    1. Agreed! Reads better than quite a few MoH awards. Disrespect is not intended, neither to the MoH awardees nor fellow Marines.

  3. Cpl. Jones, you are a true hero. You could have easily been wounded or killed yourself, but chose to save others. This is true valor. Semper Fi Marine.

  4. This Marine should have been given the Navy Cross, not the Bronze Star. Looks like someone in the chain of command does not want to give out the right medal, Marine Headquarters needs to reevaluate his actions.

      1. Technical point, Sgt. Shimono: He was AWARDED the Silver Star, not given.

        1. It’s the thought that matters Lt. So glad they got it done without dying, and completely agree with a Navy Cross….without waiting 20 years for the upgrade. SEMPER FI CPL Jason Jones!

  7. Corp. Jones. Marine. Thank you Sgt Gritz for sharing stories like his! Actions like his will live on forever in the history of the Marine Corps and our grateful nation. It motivates me and helps me get thru trying times reading stories of battlefield heroics. Makes my problems pale in comparison! Thank you. SEMPER FIDELIS!

  8. I worked with this Marine’s father and followed his weekly exploits on the high school gridiron and powerlifting. He was quite an athlete growing up. His father was Army Army Vietnam Veteran, he was was a M60 gunner. He very proud of Jason, we talked often about him and his father would keep me updated on where he was stationed. I later read about this action in Leatherneck Magazine. I’m sure Jason doesn’t remember me, but this old Marine remembers Cpl. Jason Jones. Semper Fidelis Marine!
