MARINE OF THE WEEK: Lance Cpl. Christopher S. Adlesperger

MARINE OF THE WEEK:

Lance Cpl. Christopher S. Adlesperger
3rd Battalion, 5th Marines
Fallujah, Iraq, Nov. 10, 2004
Award: Navy Cross (awarded posthumously)

As Lance Cpl. Adlesperger made entry into a house in the Jolan District of Al Fallujah during Operation AL FAJR, his squad received a heavy volume of enemy machine gun fire from a well-prepared entrenched machine gun position. These fires instantly killed the point man, and injured another Marine and the platoon corpsman. Exposed to heavy enemy machine gun fire and grenades, Adlesperger immediately attacked the enemy with rifle fire. While doing so, he suffered a fragmentation wound from enemy grenades. With the majority of his platoon pinned down by insurgent positions, Adlesperger single-handedly cleared stairs and a roof top to move the injured to a rooftop where they could receive medical attention. On his own initiative, while deliberately exposing himself to heavy enemy fire, he established a series of firing positions and attacked the enemy, forcing them to be destroyed in place or to move into an area where adjacent forces could engage them. Disregarding his own wounds and physical exhaustion, Adlesperger rejoined his platoon and demanded to take the point for a final assault on the same machine gun position. Once an Assault Amphibian Vehicle created a breach in the wall adjacent to the enemy’s position, Adlesperger was the first Marine to re-enter the courtyard where he eliminated a remaining insurgent at close range. When the fighting finally ceased, a significant number of insurgents from fortified positions had been eradicated. Through his actions, Adlesperger destroyed the last strongpoint in the Jolan District of Al Fallujah, and saved the lives of his fellow Marines. Sadly, he was later killed in action. 13. I have mixed feelings about writing this but here goes. Considering what is going on in Iraq and Afghanistan today, this is sad story about a truly great and courageous Marine. I served in Vietnam 68-69. (total service 66-69) They sacrificed our brothers there also for a war they were not going to let us win. As far as Fallujah, when they did not surrender, we should have carpet bombed the place into oblivion. In WWII, at the end of the war, guys thought, maybe we will survive this awful mess. When they approached a German town and took fire, they pulled back and let the artillery take over. They did not care who got killed and I don’t blame them. We have let politics keep us from doing our job. It stinks. Thank You Lance Corporal Adlesperger and your family for the sacrifice you all made. God Bless and Semper Fi. Paul Chacho Jr. SGT E5, 66-69.

  14. Semper Fi, Rest In Peace, the battle is over, see you on the Street, your one HELL of a Marine.

  15. Corp Searcy ‘58-‘64
All gave some and some gave all.
Lance Cpl A dledperger gave his all for his brothers and country.
Politicians get rich and our young men sacrifice there all.
After years being in Afghanistan , nothing has changed because our brothers hands were tied.
    Semper Fi till I die.

  16. A true hero. Rest easy Marine. You are the epitome of what our Corps is all about. May God watch over your family here on Earth.

  18. Navy Cross, is that it? While I admire this Marine’s courage and bravery and providing us the ultimate sacrifice, I cannot ignore the lack of accolades he received. If the description of his actions are true and correct, in my opinion, he deserves much more. LCPL Adlesperger is a GD hero, he should be represented by a CMH appointment.
