MARINE OF THE WEEK // NO GREATER LOVE

Cpl. Jason Dunham
3rd Battalion, 7th Marines
Iraq, April 14, 2004
Award: Medal of Honor
Cpl. Dunham’s squad was conducting a reconnaissance mission in Karabilah, Iraq, when they heard rocket-propelled grenade and small arms fire erupt a distance away. Dunham led his Combined Anti-Armor Team towards the engagement to provide fire support to their Battalion Commander’s convoy, which had been ambushed as it was traveling to Camp Husaybah. As Dunham and his Marines advanced, they received enemy fire. Dunham ordered his squad to dismount their vehicles and led a fire team on foot several blocks south of the ambushed convoy. Discovering seven Iraqi vehicles attempting to depart, Dunham and his team stopped the vehicles to search them for weapons. As they approached the vehicles, an insurgent leaped out and attacked Dunham. Dunham wrestled the insurgent to the ground and in the ensuing struggle saw the insurgent release a grenade. He immediately alerted his fellow Marines to the threat and, aware of the imminent danger and without hesitation, Dunham covered the grenade with his helmet and body, bearing the brunt of the explosion and shielding his Marines from the blast. In an ultimate and selfless act of bravery in which he was mortally wounded, he saved the lives of at least two fellow Marines. (DoD & U.S. Marine Corps photos)

  2. Quiet and all alone, I sit here and shed a tear for the loss of a brother Marine whom I never knew.
I think of his family and the lives of the Marines he saved that day. The loss so painful it must be difficult to carry on. I wish his family and loved ones peace from my heart.

  6. I had the honor of getting to know Durham while training in Virginia and then serving with him out at 29 palms a few yrs later. He is truly a Marine’Marine who’s selfless act represents everything that distinguehes the USMC as the worlds finest fight force. Oorah Devil dog. Semper.

  7. I hope his battle buddies or the blast itself killed the enemy. All of them. In combat action those vehicles should’ve been viewed as hostile and never been allowed to close the distance. Regardless Corp. Dunham’s actions serve as a warning to enemies of the United States,”you cannot defeat us militarily’ killing us just makes us mad!

  8. Rest In Peace ??????May your family and friends and fellow Marines find comfort in sharing their stories of Cpl. Dunham. Truly an American Hero ??

  12. There is no greater act than to give one’s life for The Lord, friend, family, or country. Cpl. Dunham is an outstanding example of that courage and dedication.

  14. Jason was a good friend. He was my squad leader before he went to the fleet. He had a good, pure heart. I ended up taking over his squad when he left for 3/7, and then coincidentally took over his squad in 3/7 as well! I’n honor of him and our other fellow Marines, I’ll often workout at the US Marine Corps monument here in North Tonawanda, NY, where he has a plaque in memory of his selfless service. If anyone wants a deeper look into his story, you can read the book, Gift of Valor.
