MCAS El Toro (kinda sorta)

MCAS El Toro (kinda sorta)

It is with great sadness I send these photos. Some will recognize some things, but all of the barracks are gone. All of the housing along Tabuco/Irvine Blvd are gone. The first pic would be of the old gate #2 where the F-4 was on the pedestal. I have a story about that for another time… one pic is the old commissary gate and some from where the Main Gate used to be. I am trying to document as much as I can.

I do hope it brings some fond memories to those who were stationed there throughout our Corps history. Just a little trip down memory lane.

Semper Fi,
Sgt. Jeff Wolven

  1. WAS STATIONED THERE IN THE 60-61 ERA WITH VMA-311 & VMA-211 . WE HAD THE A4D-2N AT THAT TIME. GREAT SMALL AIRCRAFT. I WAS ON THE FLIGHT LINE. WE NEVER LOST ONE EVEN HAVING A LOT OF PILOT’S PASSING THRU IN TRAINING.WE LIVED OFF BASE & I CAN STILL REMEMBER DRIVING HOME OR TO WORK WITH THE DRIVERS WINDOW DOWN & TRYING TO SEE THE ROAD WITH ALL THE FOG. CAN ANYONE REMEMBER THE LARGE CHAINS THAT LINED THE BEGINNING OF THE RUNWAY THAT COULD BE USED IN A EMERGENCY BY DROPPING THE TAIL HOOK ?? OR THE AREA THAT WAS OFF THE END WHERE THE ORD GUYS WOULD REMOVE ANY HUNG ROCKETS. YEAH, THAT WAS GOOD OLD DAYS AS THEY SAY.NOT A DAY GOES BY THAT SOMETHING,SOME HOW REMIND’S ME OF THAT ERA OF MY LIFE. NOW AT 77, IT HAS HELPED ME MANY TIME’S GET THRU A SAD TIME & FOR THAT I CAN SAY PROUDLY SEMPER FI

    1. Just a quick laugh. While working the flight line , we had a great group of pilots, but once and awhile we would get one that couldn’t take a joke. Had one come in & on the write up sheet comment that there was a clicking noise on his helmet. SOUNDS LIKE TRACK TEAM WITH CLEATS. I ADJUSTED THE CLIP ON THE SHOULDER HARNESS. I SIGNED OFF ON THE SHEET STATING. ISSUE SNEAKERS TO TRACK TEAM. A couple laughed but a captain went apeshit. O well . All in a day in the air wing.
