During my time in the Marine Corps,-1948-1950,- mess halls were completely staffed by Marines. PVTs & PFCs all over the halls, pot scrubbers, scullery, servers, garbage detail. etc. Usually 30 days at a time.
NCOs were cooks, meat cutters, etc.
Can anyone tell me if the mess halls still operate like this or is it all handled by contractors/vendors? If so, when did this operation change. And how are meals handled in the field? By Marines or who?
