miss it all

man, I miss it all. I miss being an 18 year old buck fresh on the rock. I miss the morning 5am PT runs around Camp Schawb, I miss the force marches from Schawb to Hansen and back. The chow, I was one of those "son, you can go to jail or join the Marines" guys, I was use to bad chow in juvy so Marine Corps chow was a step up and SOS wasn't all that bad with eggs. Most of all I miss the floats to PI, man…I wore myself out on PI.Funny how much I hated it then, little did I know it was the time of my life.  H&S Co, 3/9, 3rdMarDiv 1975 – 1977

  1. “Miss it all”, I was at Camp Hansen from ’75-’76. Started in Kilo 3/4 then to India 3/4. While in Kilo, I was the Co. Armorer for a brief time and the C.O. was Capt. Baker. Then while In India, I was T.A.D. to 3/4 HQ to be the Bn. Commanders driver. The Bn C.O. was Lt. Col. D. Morris. He was the best boss I had ever had the opportunity to work for. On the other hand, the Bn. Sgt. Major was Sgt. Major Billups. He and I rarely saw eye to eye on anything and I was often reminded of that so needless to say my tour with the Col. was a short one. If you’re in Southern California sometime, I would suggest at visit to a coffee shop in Fountain Valley called “Paul’s coffee shop”. The former owner was a retired Marine and the place still makes S.O.S. the way they made it back in 74-76. It is served on an old stamped metal mess tray and you can buy one there for about $11.00. I STILL miss the Corps every day even with its bad times.
