Nam Vet 68-69

In response to SGT on the bus I’ve always felt that a DOC was worth his or her weight in gold…I carried the M-60 with Medivac Mike 3-5 in what was called I CORP area in Nam…So I was involved with TET on a personal level…One thing never mattered and that was , was the DOC Navy or Marine and it never mattered…All I know is the DOC tried to help the one in the worse shape and if I had to make that decision between Marine or Sailor I’d make the same decision …After all , we all know that Marines are the mens department in the department of the Navy…

  1. I constantly remind squids that I know about that same undeniable truth concerning the men’s department. They piss and moan and carry on but can’t dispute it because they know it is so!

  2. I tell the squids “You are a taxi cab driver for us”.
We all served, this is just a rivilary between us.

  3. When I got medevaced in ’68 the corosman at the hospital was a guy I played ball against in high school. Thanked him profusely for the care and then told him sorry he could.nt make it as a Marine. My next pain shot was a little painful..Guess was pay back

  4. I served as a Devil Doc with Lima 3/9 in Vietnam 1967-1968 and with H&S 3rd Tanks in 1968 and I was never called a squid or swabby by any Marine with a CAR. I was treated with the same love and respect as any other Marine. I earned their respect as they earned mine. I try to see my Marines at least once a year and my door is always open for any of my brothers.

  5. We called them Devil Docs or Corpseman and they were treated with the utmost respect. Don’t forget, they helped raise the flag on Suribachi. During one of our Marine Corps Balls in Vegas, a couple of our Docs in their dress whites were being stared down by a couple of nasty civilians at the bar. I went over to the docs, bought them a drink and said rather loudly “no one is going to mess with you, there are 600 Marines here.”

    1. Hi, Chris!
Like you, I also have utmost respect for our corpsmen, but Doc Bradley was NOT one of the six who raised the flag on Mount Suribachi.

  6. I joined the corps July 31 1957 . 3rd battalion quonset huts. Graduated late Oct. They told us they were going to demolish the quonset huts and build new barracks. During the last few weeks of training we where the only platon in 3rd bat. Cpl e 4 Billy Wagner Semper Fi

  7. Unfortunately, Doc Bradley and Rene Gagnon have been poo pooed as flag raisers. Recent research revealed two other Marines were involved in the famous photo. After reading Flags of Our Fathers and seeing the movie I’ll still cling to the myth that Bradley and Gagnon were flag raisers. Just call it a Sea Story!

  10. The first day I met my future father-in-law he told me, “Just remember, the Marines are a DEPARTMENT of the Navy.” My response was, “Yeah, the men’s department sir!” He laughed and said he had heard that before. So I then responded, “The better part!” Again we laughed but I reminded him often that his only son joined the Marines, not the Navy. We got along great until the day he passed away. About an hour before his passing he thanked for for taking care of his little girl and told me “Anchors Away.” As a sign of respect I also told him Anchors away. I miss that guy. He was one hell of a guy, even if he was a Squid!
