Origin Of The “Old Corps”

Capt. Samuel Nicholas announced on the first day of recruitment at Tun Tavern that all new recruits would get a tankard of rum.

The next morning he announced that since there wasn’t as many recruits as expected that all new recruits would get two tankards of rum.

A Marine in the back row said: “We didn’t have it that good in the Old Corps”

  2. Well, in my ‘old corps’ (everybody’s is different, I know), it was the other way around. First day of recruiting, they got rum. When the rum was gone the next day, the new guys only got beer. The other version was – you needed to bring your own musket when enlisting at first – later guys had them issued. As is – “In the old Corps we had to bring our own musket”.

  3. The bar tender, Samuel Nicholas, told a guy that Capt Robert Mullan was giving away a tankard of rum. So the first recruit asked the Capt “what this all about?” Capt said “I’m recruiting for the Marine Corps. You get a tankard of rum and 10 dollars every month. Do you have a musket?” The first recruit said “yes”. He signed up and went to the back 0f the tavern and started drinking his rum. The next recruit asked the capt “what’s this all about?” The Capt said, “I’m recruiting for the Marine Corps. You get a tankard of rum and 10 dollarsevery month. Do you have a musket?” The second recruit answered, “No”. The Capt. said “We’ll get you one.” So the guy signed up and went to the back of the tavern and sat next to the first recruit. The first recruit asked the second recruit, “What ya get?” The second recruit answered, “I got a tankard of rum and a silver piece every month and they will get me a musket.” The first recruit blew out some air and said, “Sh*t, back in the Old Corps ya’ had to have your own musket”

But one fellow Marine really gave me the complement of my life. It was in 2018 and when I told him I was in Nam in 68-69 he said ” Oh, you were in the “Old Corps”. I’d about fell over. I finally made it at 71 years old. Semper Fi all. Paul Chacho Jr. Sgt E5 66-69.
