Poor before the Corp

When I went into Boot Camp I met a Marine who was so happy to be in Boot Camp. When I asked him why, he told me he shared a bed with 5 other siblings, never had 3 meals a day or had Healthcare and had no teeth. Well he said sleeping in his own bed the first night was a dream come true along with them giving him a new set of dentures. I thought to myself, wow, alot of them were dirt poor and the Corp made them feel rich. USMC 1972 1974

  1. Hey Reinhold – Don’t think I’ve ever heard of that bad a case. Semper Fi!!! Top Pro

  2. Entered MCRD San Diego in Nov 1964. Wound up in Plt 3006. Had a fellow recruit from West (By God) West Virginia. Can’t remember how bad his teeth were but they pulled all of them. He was a hell of a rifle shot!

  3. Several recruits when I arrived at MCRDSD were pulled from the ranks to attend classes to raise their reading level to sixth grade. …68 years ago.

  4. I knew a retired Sergeant Major, passed, who told me that before he went into the Marine Corps that he had never had more than one pair of shoes at a time…..Bob 1381 Vietnam 1966/1967 Semper Fi.

  5. I can understand your reaction. I was a young naive kid when I joined in 1968. I served with a guy with very limited education and a drafted school teacher.
