Swoopin’

I was stationed at NCAA Beaufort, SC from ’65 – ’68. Marines from MCAS and PI would “Swoop” north to Philly, NYC and north for the weekend. Around Richmond we would pick up Cousin Brucie in WABC on the radio and knew we were almost home. 14 hrs was considered good travel time. I lived in Philly, now in South Jersey near Exit #3 of the NJTrnPke and still remember those wek-end drops and pick-ups. Semper Fi to all Swoopers.

  1. You are aware that Philly was off limits on a normal weekend, right? D.C. was the limit heading North-East from Lejeune. I made normal weekends to Boston (16 hours) if you didn’t get a ticket. Didn’t leave much time to spend with MaryJane, but it was worth it.

    1. Roger that. We knew and went. Back then it was “Beaufort, Beaufort by the sea, 26 miles from Yamasee…s..ks”. Should have bought land there back then. Going back from a Valentine weekend and major snowstorm hit the Northeast. NJ, Del, Md, VA closdd down Rte 95. We made it back to shave & shower, and report. Caught hell as 2 of us (NYC and Philly) made it back while a Sgt from VA, (outside DC), who swooped up with us, didn’t get back till Tues. Good times.
