WM Platoon 11-A 1965

WM Platoon 11-A 1965

Sgt. Grit,

Since the guys send in their boot camp platoon graduation pictures, I decided to send in mine. I'm in Row 3, 5th from right. Perhaps some other WMs from Plt.11-A, which graduated 27 Oct.1965, read your newsletters, and may enjoy this.

Several years ago I was able to contact our senior WM DI, Sgt. Janet Kemmerer of Lancaster OH, to thank her. She retired as a Maj.years ago. Maybe there's another WM from 11-A out there who remembers.

Thanks if you decide to put it in your scuttlebutt newsletter!

  1. I believe that the SSGT C. R. Mills in your picture was my first Senior Drill Instructor in (Dec 63) Plt 303 1964 Jan -Mar can you send in a larger picture? I always enjoyed the company of any of the WM’s I met and have a great respect for them.

  2. Greetings Leonard B. Glasser, You are correct about SSGT C.R. Mills he was our 1st Senior D.I. then came Sgt R.T.Ward, Sgt Lloyd C. W. Chevers and Sgt J. C. Young our Junior D.I.’s We were together when we went from Manchester NH by train to South Station in Boston to hop another train to go to Yemmessee , SC then bussed to PISC. Small word isn’t it? I saw this post on Sgt Grit. I spent 30 years in the Corps. I would like to hear from you. my e-mail address is jarhead6393@gmail.com HMPH 702-534-7438 John L. Devine SGTMAJ USMC Ret. Semper Fi

  3. Outstanding. I agree that is awesome to see our WMs and their history with our Corps. And not saying that to be PC either.

  4. Great picture! I served with SSgt Kemmerer and Sgt. Wirtz at P.I. on the the drill field as I also was a drill instructor and retired in 1975 as a Captain, with 21 years of service. I’m so glad to see that finally a Woman Marine posted something on Sgt. Grit. Hope more will follow. I graduated from P.I. in 1954 Platoon 14A and will try to post my platoon picture.

    1. I believe Mary Donahue, Bonnie Allman, Janet Kemmerer and one other WM were commissioned at the same time during the Vietnam War while stationed at Parris Island. We were expecting to go to OCS or BCS, and that did not happen. I grabbed a couple of WM 2ndLts to learn a few lessons in wearing the officer uniform and proper officer protocols. Would love to hear from Mary and others: email address: jmknr2@att.net Thanks Sgt Grit for connecting a few Marines. Semper Fi.

  5. Wow! Does that picture bring back memories. At age 77, I would have to say, “Not as Lean, Not as Mean, but still a Marine! It was not my intent to make the Marine Corps a career, however, I always said, “I when I know longer liked what I was doing, I would get out… that was 23 years later. What an awesome experience.

  6. Hello, i had an older sis who did P.I. 1956 and a few years later taunted me with “you’d never make it”.and the rest is history. Semper Fi, Joe USMC 63-67. Nam 65-66
