40 Years Ago and I Remember It Like It Was Yesterday

I had not been in country long around 3 months on this 1/21/1968. It was just past  midnight and the word came down that we had NVA in the wire and there was a break in our lines. Every 3rd man turned and watched the back in case we got jumped from behind.

I killed my first human being that night but he would not be my last. They hit us hard and I heard men die and I saw others get wounded, I was lucky that night I did not get a scratch but I lost a friend that I will never forget. We went thru training together and he was a true friend. The next morning I saw the bodies of Marines that a couple of days ago we had been laughing and talking. This day has since been a hard day for me. I lived, not a scratch that time. I guess the GOD was saying happy birthday JT.

To all that lost their lives at Khe Sanh, may god keep you, to all of us that are still here Semper Fi.
