Here’s a Marine standing guard, next to a brick wall that had been hit by some sort of explosion, in what appears to be a dress blue uniform. The year was 1911 in Peking, China.

Apparently BCGs are older than I thought! I wore the black-framed “Buddy Holly style” till they became popular again, at which point the Corps changed over to an even uglier brown style. Great for seeing with, I must admit.
That looks like a hot uniform to be standing guard in. It makes sense they would be in a dressier uniform, since they were with the American Embassy, weren’t they? Were field khakis even a prescribed uniform then?
